Does YNAB work in Europe?
Yes. YNAB imports transactions directly from banks in 18 European countries, the UK and Italy included, though not every account type is covered. Two things are worth knowing before you start: a plan has one currency (YNAB suggests a separate plan for each currency), and the price is in US dollars, 14.99 a month or 109 a year, with a 34 day free trial.
If you are paid in one currency and want a method to give every euro a job, YNAB is excellent. If you are paid in several currencies by platforms and clients, and your question is “how much can I spend today”, Freeboard starts from there.

Where YNAB is stronger
- The method. YNAB teaches a way to handle money, with guides and a large community around it. For many people the habit is worth more than any number.
- Maturity. Twenty years of product, native apps on every platform, and tens of thousands of reviews.
- Sharing. One subscription can be shared with other people.
- Categories. Detailed budgeting by category, with targets.
Where Freeboard is different
- One number, twelve months ahead. Freeboard looks for the lowest point of the next twelve months and tells you what you can spend today without crossing it. YNAB works on the money you already have.
- Several currencies in one total. Accounts in dollars, pounds and baht sit next to euros, converted at the ECB reference rate.
- Platform payouts. Stripe, Upwork and Fiverr payouts are recognised among your transactions, and passive income is kept apart from the work you bill.
- Italian, as well as English.
Freeboard is new: no track record, no reviews, no native app, and one dashboard per person. What it does differently is narrow: one number, twelve months ahead, counting only income you can rely on, for people in Europe paid by clients and platforms in several currencies.
Which one fits you
YNAB if you are paid in one currency, want a proven method and a mature app, and like to plan category by category.
Freeboard if you are paid by clients and platforms in several currencies and want one number you can check in the morning. Try the demo with example data, and the safe to spend calculator with your own.
There is no importer from YNAB today: in Freeboard you start from your bank accounts and your plan.
